Club Intimate Wins the 2010 Red Herring Asia Top 100 Tech Startup Award

Melbourne, Australia – 24 November 2010 – Club Intimate announced today it has won the 2010 Red Herring Asia Top 100 Tech Startup Award. Club Intimate was initially selected as a finalist for this award in October 2010. Following the presentation by Club Intimate’s Founder & CEO, Arshad Khan in Shanghai, Red Herring announced its Top 100 Asia Award in recognition of the leading private companies from Asia, celebrating these startups’ innovations and technologies across their respective industries.

“We are quite thrilled and proud of our accomplishment”, said Arshad Khan. “Winning of this ward was no easy task; Club Intimate was selected as a winner from hundreds of companies across Asia. Attending the event also gave me the opportunity to meet the brightest and smartest entrepreneurs from Asia”.

Red Herring’s Top 100 Asia list has become a mark of distinction for identifying promising new companies and entrepreneurs. Red Herring editors were among the first to recognize that companies such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, Skype,, YouTube, and eBay would change the way we live and work.

“Choosing the companies with the strongest potential was by no means a small feat,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “After rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across Asia to the Top 100 Winners. We believe Club Intimate embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture. Club Intimate should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was very strong.”

Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluated the companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, management quality, strategy, and market penetration. This assessment of potential is complemented by a review of the track record and standing of startups relative to their sector peers, allowing Red Herring to see past the “buzz” and make the list a valuable instrument of discovery and advocacy for the most promising new business models in Asia.

“This year was especially difficult,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “Despite the global economic situation, there were many great companies producing really innovative and amazing products that we had a difficult time narrowing the pool and selecting the finalists. Club Intimate shows great promise therefore deserves to be among the Finalists. Now we’re faced with the difficult task of selecting the Winners of the Top 100 Asia Award.

Finalists for the award are selected based upon their technological innovation, management strength, market size, investor record, customer acquisition, and financial health. During the several months leading up to the announcement, hundreds of companies in the mobile, security, Web 2.0, software, hardware, biotech, and clean tech industries sent in their submissions to qualify for the award.

The Finalists are invited to present their winning strategies at the Red Herring Asia forum in Shanghai, November 15-16, 2010. The Top 100 winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on November 16 at the event.

Choosing a Photo for Your Online Dating Profile

Profile PhotoMany people rush through the process of creating their dating profile but this is not something that you should hurry.  Your profile is the way that you let other people know who you are, what you like, and what you are looking for. Those that rush through the process of creating their profile will find out that it is much more difficult to meet the type of people that they want to meet than it should be. One of the most important elements of putting together a great profile is choosing the right photo.

How to Choose Your Photo
Choosing your photo for your online dating profile is actually very simple, if you let it be. First of all, you should choose a very current photograph.  Many people have a picture of themselves from ten years ago that they really love, and while it is a great picture for your parents and your friends to have of you, it probably isn’t really representative of who you are now. We all change as we age and the more current your photograph the better. A good rule of thumb is not to use a picture that is more than nine to 12 months old.

Next, you should make sure that your picture is representative of who you are. If you are a really introverted, private person you shouldn’t attempt to post nude or really sexy photographs. Your photographs should compliment what you write on your profile, so make sure that whatever picture you post that it goes along with what you have written. For instance, if you hate being outdoors you shouldn’t post that one picture of you when you were forced to hike with a friend!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and this could not be truer than it is when it comes to online dating. Your picture is often what will draw people in and allow them to learn more about you, so have a picture that is representative of who you are, and could stand alone if it had to.

A lot of people make the mistake of trying to post pictures that show their entire figure. The main picture that you choose should be one that shows your face, front and center.  If you have the ability to post more pictures you can post full length pictures, but this isn’t necessary.  If you hit it off with someone you can always send them more pictures through email. Just remember that if you do post many pictures to leave something to the imagination!

Twitter’s Success was Predicted in 2006

TwitterIn 2006, 747 Media conducted a feasibility study for Twitter, asking people in the streets if they would use it. They were shown the Twitter website, and were given a basic rundown of the text-to-phone and text-to-website options.

Checklist for Online Dating

Online DatingOnline dating is a lot of fun if you know what you want, know what you are getting into, and are dedicated to making the most of it.  If you sign up for online dating and you aren’t into it, it likely won’t work for you. There are some really simple things that you can do to make the most of your online dating experience.

Online Dating Checklist
When dating online there are several things that you need to think about or do to make sure that you have the most successful time possible.

- Know who you are
- Know what you want from someone else
- Be aware of what type of people you are most attracted to
- Take time to write a profile that is honest
- Carefully select a picture that is representative of who you are
- Update your profile often
- Progress slowly when communicating with others
- Only meet other people in public the first few times you go out
- Look through other profiles often
- Take action; don’t expect others to find you
- Contact others with confidence

As you can see, there are many things that you can do to make your online dating experience the best possible.  Writing an accurate profile is probably the most important thing that you can do when it comes to dating online, so make this a priority.  Many people spend a couple hours writing a profile, and this is usually a good choice.  The more time you spend on your profile, the more accurate it will be, which makes attracting the right kind of people as simple as possible.

You may need to modify the above checklist to fit your needs or your personality. The basis of the checklist is that there are a few things that you need to do to get started.  What you do from there is up to you.  Some people are very passive about the online dating scene while others are very aggressive.  Put yourself out there and make the world of online dating yours.

Remember when you are dating online that it is supposed to be fun. If you take yourself too seriously you will have a difficult time finding someone who wants to spend time with you, so approach online dating with a great attitude, follow the checklist, and in time you will find that your online experience has definitely benefited your social life in a very positive way.

How Much Information? A Report on American Consumers.

Global Information Industry Center, University of California, San Diego has just released a very interesting report entitled ‘How Much Information? A Report on American Consumers.’ This report looks at how much information Americans consume across all forms of media.

The report says, ‘In 2008, Americans consumed information for about 1.3 trillion hours, an average of almost 12 hours per day. Consumption totalled 3.6 zettabytes and 10,845 trillion words, corresponding to 100,500 words and 34 gigabytes for an average person on an average day. A zettabyte is 10 to the 21st power bytes, a million gigabytes. These estimates are from an analysis of more than 20 different sources of information, from very old (newspapers and books) to very new (portable computer games, satellite radio, and Internet video). Information at work is not included.’

Information Flows in a Home

The report also says that:

  • Bytes of information consumed by U.S. individuals have grown at 5.4 percent annually since 1980, far less than the growth rate of computer and information technology performance
  • Roughly 3.6 zettabytes (or 3,600 exabytes) of information were consumed in American homes in 2008. Americans spend 41 percent of our information time watching television, but TV accounts for less than 35 percent of information bytes consumed
  • Computer and video games account for 55 percent of all information bytes consumed in the home, because modern game consoles and PCs create huge streams of graphics.

Club Intimate wasn’t mentioned, may be next time :)

You can read the whole report here.

Since recently, eBay had controlling interest in Skype. On 19 November 2009, eBay announced the sale of Skype in a deal valuing the business at $2.75 billion. The Importance of a Good User Name

CoupleOnline dating user names are really important and you want them to say something about you, but in a good way. Many times online daters choose a user name that is not in their best interest. This could result in a lack of interest in your profile. There are some suggestions, however, to help you choose a good user name and some examples of what’s hot and what’s not.

First of all, your user name should reflect you in some way, but it should also be easy to remember and original. When people see your user name they will either become interested or turned off, so be creative. Choose something that is memorable, honest, short and fun and you will have a great user name!

The easiest way to choose a user name is to sit down with a pen and paper and brainstorm. Consider who you are, the types of user names you like, and then put it all together and personalize it. Doing this is the best way for you to come up with an original and catchy user name.

Examples of User Names
Some great examples of user names include names like RocknRollRoxanne or RusticRandy. You may prefer a user name like SanFranMan or BabyBlueEyes, both of which are acceptable and incorporate the recommendations of short, easy to remember, and original. The types of user names you will want to avoid at all costs include LonelyLiz, HopelessHarry, LookingforLove, and things of this nature.
It is obvious you are trying to find a date because you are on an online dating website. So, you don’t have to spell out your loneliness in your user name. Also, don’t sound too confidant either with usernames like HotLover or DrLove.

Get a Second Opinion
If you have come up with a couple user names you like but you are not sure which one will be the best for you then get a second opinion. Ask a close friend to evaluate the usernames you came up with and recommend the best one for you. Your friend will be able to tell you if the username seems desperate, sad, over-confidant, or lonely. More than likely a second opinion will be all it takes to help you decide on the best user name for an online dating site.
With this information you are now ready to begin the process of choosing a user name. Relax and just start brainstorming. Write everything down on a piece of paper and then see what you come up with. You may find that you have a couple of user names you don’t particularly like but by combining a couple you may find the right username!

Fall of Google

google-logoSean Parker, Managing Partner of Founder’s Fund, gave a presentation entitled “The New Era of The Network Service” at Web 2.0 Summit 2009. In his presentation, Sean tries to prove the point that in the next decade ‘network services’ like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin will dominate the World Wide Web as compare to ‘information services’ like Google, Yahoo and MSN.

I totally agree with Sean on this. Whilst there will always bee a need for information and data, the real value is provided to people by providing platforms that help connect people and build relationships. This is the core value of Club Intimate as well.

Below is the full slide deck of Sean’s presentation.

Sean Parker’s Web 2.0 Summit Presentation is not Playing Friendly with Club Intimate“ is a simple and FREE service that makes updating your social networks a snap!” This is how promotes its services on its front page of their website. So about ten days ago I decided to take up the offer and signed up. Anyone who uses services like or Hellotxt will understand the value of updating their social profiles on various different social networks and bookmarking services with one click. This is exactly the outcome I was hoping to achieve.

So on the day I signed up, I set-up my social profiles at Linkedin, Facebook and Plaxo with Setting up these networks with was a breeze.  I also tested the service by sending one status update and a blog post. To send RSS feed of my blog, I first created an account with Twitterfeed to push the feed to In turn, sends my feed to the social networks that I have linked. Everything has worked as it should and I was very pleased with the fifteen minutes I spent setting up these services.

To my surprise however, last week I could not login to my account at Initially I thought that I may have forgotten password or may be using an incorrect email address to login. Well, this wasn’t the case, has either deleted or suspended my account and they have done this without sending me any notification. Needless to say I was pretty upset. One would understand if I were to abuse their services or didn’t comply with their terms of services then they would have all the rights to suspend my account but this is not the case. By the way, does not have any terms of service document on their website. One would think that a large service like this would tell their users how their services are meant to be used. This beats me!

Feeling upset and dejected, I decided to contact through their contact page and asked if they have suspended or deleted my account and if they could provide a reason for doing so. One week on and I am yet to receive a reply from them.

So all in all, my experience with has been very poor. Well if you ask me, I am not totally surprised of the service levels I have received. This is what happens when a couple of developers set-up a successful web service who has no experience in customer service or understanding the value of a having a customers’ charter. They are probably good programmers but have no idea how to service their clients. This is probably one of the reasons why there is no terms of service document found on their website.

For me, there is always Hellotxt.
